At the IEDM 2024 conference, NVIDIA presented a unique AI accelerator design strategy that employs silicon photonics as I/O components. This represents a significant shift in traditional interconnect technology, which has been constrained by the physical limitations of Copper. Additionally, NVIDIA's new architecture introduces a unique method of vertically stacking multiple GPU blocks. It integrates 12 silicon photonics components for chip interconnect, with each GPU block using three connections, and four GPU blocks per layer.
