A court document reveals that two senior police officers in Brazil have been arrested for allegedly accepting bribes and providing security for illegal gold mining activities in the amazon region. Court rulings and statements from the federal police indicate that Brazilian authorities suspect they accepted money to neglect their duties and even provide private security for illegal trades of gold extracted from indigenous lands and protected areas. According to the documents, another 36 police officers were dismissed for allegedly participating in protection schemes, with luxury autos, jewelry, mobile phones, and an unspecified quantity of gold and cash seized. Brazil is attempting to combat the surge in illegal gold mining activities in recent years due to record-high gold prices worldwide. It is reported that more than half of the gold exported from Brazil is illegally produced.
