BHP Group Ltd CFO Vandita Pant said that copper demand is poised for a significant increase, but the supply is becoming increasingly challenging. Pant stated that copper demand is showing a very positive (growth) trend, but copper supply growth is becoming more and more difficult, with a shortage expected in the market later this century. Pant mentioned that the demand is coming not only from traditional industries but increasingly from decarbonization, energy transition demands, emerging digital demand sources such as datacenters. It is expected that from now until 2050, copper demand will increase by 70%, but due to miners needing to balance cash requirements, higher technical levels resulting from declining ore grades, and stakeholders' expectations to reduce environmental impact, (increasing) supply will become more challenging and complex.
