A 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred near the copper and lithium mining area in northern Chile. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 9:50 p.m. local time. The largest copper mine in the world, Escondida, jointly owned by BHP Group Ltd and Rio Tinto, is located around the area. SQM's Salar de Atacama lithium mine is located to the south of San Pedro de Atacama.
