On June 28th, local time, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 1984 legal precedent known as the "Chevron deference" by a vote of 6 to 3, thus ruling to revoke the judgments of lower courts against multiple fishery companies. Previously, fishery companies questioned the government's monitoring of overfishing on the New England coast. The overturned precedent was related to the oil company Chevron, which required judges to respect federal institutions' reasonable interpretation of ambiguous U.S. laws. After the precedent was overturned, "the court must exercise its independent judgement to determine whether an agency has acted within the scope of its statutory authority," wrote Chief Justice Roberts in the ruling.
