Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes decided on June 20th to end the investigation into Alphabet-owned Google and Telegram. In the ruling, Alexandre de Moraes agreed with the opinion of Brazil's Deputy Attorney General that there was no reason to initiate criminal proceedings against the two technology companies. Last May, Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered an investigation into the executives of social media company Telegram and Google. Earlier, Google and Telegram had opposed a proposed internet regulation bill on their platforms, but later deleted posts in accordance with the Supreme Court's order. The bill would require internet companies, search engines, and social information services to be responsible for discovering and reporting illegal materials, rather than letting the courts handle it, and would impose hefty fines on companies that fail to do so.
