JPMorgan stated in a report that reduction in short selling and short covering were contributing factors to the rise of US stock market, forming a 'stable support stream'. JPMorgan believes that one factor that supported the US stock market in the past twelve months is the reduction of short positions in two major stock ETFs - SPDR S&P 500 and Invesco QQQ (respectively tracking the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 index). Since the second quarter of 2023, short positions have been steadily declining, and short positions are gradually being covered.
