Intel (INTC.US) recently collaborated with 14 Japanese partners to plan to rent Sharp's idle LCD panel plant as an advanced semiconductor technology R&D center. On the one hand, Intel and its partners can reduce costs, while on the other hand, Sharp can also obtain additional rental income. It is reported that Sharp's factories located in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture and Taki District are candidate locations. Intel will collaborate with 14 suppliers including Omron, Resonac, and Murata Machinery to develop back-end chip packaging technology in the clean room of Sharp's LCD panel factory. It is expected to be related to Intel's research and development of glass substrate packaging technology.
