On May 15, local time, a bipartisan group of senators led by US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released a report called the “AI Policy Roadmap,” calling on the US Congress to enact legislation to mitigate the potential harm of artificial intelligence and fund research to promote the US economy and national security. The group recommended increasing federal spending on non-defense AI innovation to at least $32 billion a year as soon as possible. This expenditure will cover a wide range of initiatives, from assisting in the design and manufacture of high-end AI chips to local election initiatives to a series of “AI Challenge” programs that encourage innovation. Schumer said the $32 billion investment is “an important recommendation in the policy roadmap to keep our companies, universities, and workers at the cutting edge and strengthen America's dominant position in AI.” (interface)
