A draft statement from the US-EU Trade and Technology Commission shows that the EU and the US plan to use artificial intelligence to find alternatives to so-called permanent chemicals commonly found in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. The statement said, “We plan to continue to work to find research cooperation opportunities using alternatives to perfluorine and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in chips. For example, we plan to explore artificial intelligence capabilities and the use of digital twins to accelerate the discovery of suitable materials to replace PFAS in semiconductor manufacturing.” PFAS, commonly known as “permanent chemicals,” are widely used in industrial production, but they also appear in the human body, food, and water, and the substance does not decompose naturally.
