Shell, a large US oil producer in the Gulf of Mexico, said on Thursday that it had stopped production of its three deepwater platforms in the Gulf of Mexico after two pipelines were leaked and closed. The total designed oil production of the three platforms is up to 410000 barrels per day. Chet Chiasson, executive director of Greater Lafourche Port Commission, said a failure at an onshore pipeline connection in Louisiana led to about two barrels of oil spill. It is estimated that the repair will take about a day. A Shell spokesman said the leak had been brought under control and the company expected the Mars and Amberjack pipelines to resume service on Aug. 12. Shell is coordinating with the local government to mobilize personnel and equipment to assess the situation.
